I graduated college in the very early 80s. New wave music was big and San Francisco was a bit of an avant-garde utopia. While learning the history of the Bauhaus and Dada art movements, and artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Luis Buñuel, I was also concurrently listening to music from the punk and new wave bands, such as The Clash, Blondie, The Cure, and many more. Experiencing the mix of these movements past and present was a bit of an ironic kismet. I remember one day the filmmaker William Farley came to speak in a class. He told us about his varied career, and although lightening didn’t strike then and there, something magical did happen. I have never pursued a straight career path, and somehow I come back to this day when I listened to William Farley. I don’t think it was a conscious career move on my part, but somehow his story engaged me and I have followed a similar but different path. We have one life to live and I want to make the most of it. After graduating, my studies continued, but not in the form of another degree, but rather just in a quest to fulfill my curious spirit. I am so thankful to have grown up in San Francisco and to have attended SF State University because somehow without even a concerted effort on my part, I have been able to live my life on my own path, creating my own twists and turns. To me, life is a work of art, not just for the miracle that God creates us, but also that we can take it and make it and mold it to become whatever we want it to be. Maybe I’m spoiled though – I lived through this great time in history. What a fun and mind engaging time!
There are many women that I admired in my youth who influenced me a lot. I grew up very independent, partly because of the times and partly because of circumstances. I grew up during the 60s and 70s when women were gaining new freedoms. Those women had to fight through many barriers and won.
